The castle is presently the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield Bt., his wife The Hon. Lady Wakefield and their family. The family claim it is the most haunted castle because of the many ghosts which frequently haunt their home.

The most notable ghostly apparition is the ‘blue boy’ (or ‘radiant boy’) who is said to haunt the castle’s Pink Room. Many guests, whilst occupying the room, have heard terrifying wailing sounds soon to be followed by a halo of blue light appearing above their bed.

Although that particular haunting ended when a gruesome discovery during renovation work revealed the bones of a young boy and a man who had been bricked inside a wall. It was intended that no one should ever hear their piteous cries for help, as the wall was built 10 feet thick.

A Short Tour of Chillingham Castle

This was not the end to the hauntings in Chillingham Castle. The owners have also witnessed a much more sinister energy which wanders the halls…the terryfying spectre of the once evil torturer – John Sage.

JOHN SAGE – A GHOST OF EVIL PAST

When nightime falls around Chillingham Castle, one of the most feared sounds to be heard on occasions is that of ‘something’ slowly dragging its foot as it wanders the corridors. It is believed to be the spirit of former Lieutenant, John Sage who earned the nickname ‘dragfoot’, when in life, his leg was injured by a spear during his final battle in the ongoing wars with his Scottish neighbours.

After his injury he was desperate for a position of work and was proud to be given the title of Chillingham Castle torturer by the castle owner Edward Longshanks (1200 AD). Sage was a monster of a man and his gruesome work would give him immense satisfaction for the next 3 years, where he would go on to torture at least 50 of his Scottish enemies per week.

Sage would revel as the Scots were captured and tossed into the castle’s dungeons. These poor souls would wish they had perished on the battlefield, as Sage was renowned for carrying out the most hideous tortures in history. One torture device came to be known as one of the most feared…’the cage’. This apparatus would trap its victim and then be placed over a blazing fire – roasting the captive for hours, whilst Sage sat studying his enemy – writhing and screaming for their death.

Sage’s insatiable thirst for torture would eventually lead to his downfall, when one day his lover Elizabeth Charlton paid him a visit. During their sexual liaison, Sage decided to place Elizabeth on one of his other torture devices – ‘the rack’. Sage then began strangling her during the height of her sexual pleasure, but he went too far and accidentally killed her.

Chillingham Castle Ghosthunt – Orbs & Ghosts

Elizabeth’s father (a Border Reiver, clan leader and outlaw), upon hearing of his daughter’s death, warned the now almost penniless Longshanks, if he did not have Sage killed he would join in an allied attack with the Scots against the Castle.

Longshanks’ dwindling resources due to the war and the fact that the Border Reiver’s were a powerful force gave him little choice but to put Sage to death. He was hanged on the grounds of the castle on ‘Devil’s Mile’ (aka, Devil’s Walk) before a crowd of jeering onlookers.

As Sage’s body still twitched with life, the crowd set about him – slicing pieces from his body, including his nose, toes, and testicles. A rather ‘cutting’ fate, some may say, for one who’s greatest rapture was the sight of an ungodly end.

The answer isn’t simple. Science and spirituality are important to any discussion about ghosts and hauntings. Whether or not you believe in ghosts may depend on your personal experiences, how well you can remain calm and logical in an eerie setting, and your religious background.

However, most ghostly encounters aren’t as dramatic as what occurs at those famous haunts.

For example, many people wonder if their homes are haunted. Doors may seem to open and close by themselves. A television might turn itself on or off, or even change channels and volume, when no one is in the room. People sometimes feel an unexplained draft, or they feel sad, scared or angry for no apparent reason.

There can be logical explanations for all of those events, and those must be ruled out before deciding that ghosts are real and the home is haunted.

TV shows may influence viewers. They start looking at odd events and wonder if they might be caused by ghosts or even demons. That can be frightening, until they understand what’s really going on. It might be a ghost, but it might be something far simpler.

Most ghost researchers will tell you that about 80% of “haunted” houses aren’t troubled by ghosts at all. Those homes are rarely shown on TV because they’re not as sensational as those with real paranormal energy.

Ghosts are spiritual presences that, through the use of energy, usually take on a physical form to interact with the physical environment. Most ghosts are not evil or bad, rather they are spiritual energies that have a message which they need to get across to someone. Many ghosts do not, in fact, even know they are ghosts and as such simply helping them to understand this is all that is needed for them to move on.

An apparition isn’t really a ghost at all! It’s more like a memory that, because of the intense emotions and circumstances surrounding it, has been locked into time and place. Thus, when you encounter an apparition interacting with it does little to no good, because nothing is really there except for the memory.

For instance, let us suppose that a man and his wife are having an argument. The man takes out a gun and shoots his wife then turns the gun on himself. This is sometimes called a residual haunting and the best way to end an apparition is via a good clearing, cleansing, and smudging of the area.

A spirit, unlike a ghost, usually does not take on a physical form, but exists around a person in a purely energetic form which is often only visible to someone with clairvoyance. Most spirits choose to interact with our world, to hang around loved ones, and to check in on us. Sometimes, like a ghost, they may not be aware that they have crossed over. It is usually spirits that a medium connects with.

A poltergeist, a word which means noisy ghost, is most often associated with things that people are truly frightened of. Examples of poltergeist activity include chairs moving or pictures spinning. The thing about poltergeists is that they develop due to all the energy that is in the environment. Most often, we see cases of poltergeist activity in home that have children who are just entering their teens. All that pent up sexual energy and all the changing hormones produce energy that is often uncontrolled.

Uncontrolled energy is still energy and so what happens is that uncontrolled energy ends up making pictures spin and things move. When these children learn to control their emotions and energy the so called poltergeists stop being active.

The same can be true in any environment which contains a lot of high stress or high sexual energy. When this energy is not properly grounded it can create results here in the physical world.

What this basically means is that for an estimated ninety-five percent of the population that experiences ghosts, apparitions, spirits, and poltergeists, there is no real change of harm coming to them.

Every now and again, on rare occasions, we do encounter in our physical world something of a darker type of energy that is altogether evil at its very core. These energies usually are not coming from any of the above, but rather are connected to some type of demonic energy that has been allowed into our world. Attachments are more common than actual possessions. An attachment is a spiritual energy or entity that is attached to a person and/or vice versa. Attachments can form at almost any time, but are most often seen when a relative that a person was very close to crosses over and neither isn’t ready for the crossing to happen. Understand, not all attachments are bad or negative. They are only considered bad if the attachment ends up interfering in a person’s life of if the attachment attempts to take over or control a person’s life. Thus, just because Aunt Betty wants a person to continue giving money to her children long after she has passed away doesn’t mean that person is obligated to do as they are requested.

Marilyn is buried in Westwood Memorial Cemetery in Los Angeles. This cemetery is the final resting place for many of Hollywood’s most famous celebrities. Natalie Wood, Orson Welles, Rudolph Valentino, and Walter Mathau are among the celebrities resting here. But while most of the people are resting, it is said that Marilyn is not one of them. According to some, her restless ghost has been spotted a number of times near her grave stone.

Marilyn’s ghost is also said to have been spotted in the Roosevelt Hotel. This hotel has catered to many of Hollywood’s rich and famous throughout the years. Marilyn is said to be seen as an image in a mirror that once hung in the room where she would stay while she was at the hotel. The mirror has been moved out of the room and now hangs near the elevators on the main level. People often claim that they see her image in the mirror or hear a strange sound and turn to really look at the mirror, only to find nothing out of the ordinary.

Marilyn’s ghost has also been sighted in the room where she died. The house where she died is located in the elite neighbourhood of Brentwood. People visiting the house have seen her standing near the spot where she is said to have taken the fatal dose of pills.

Is Marilyn’s ghost still wandering? Stories, conspiracy theories and mystery still surround her death, Was it suicide, an accident, or maybe murder, whatever the cause perhaps she is reaching out trying to give us the answers.

Throughout history especially in Europe you can find accounts of highwaymen hauntings. They have been known to haunt, their places of execution, their hideouts and their favorite spots to rob people.

One of the most famous highwaymen was the rogue Dick Turpin. Dick was born in 1705 in Essex, England. As a young man he joined the infamous band of robbers the Gregory Gang. His life of crime included, cattle theft, smuggling, highway robbery and murder. He was caught and executed in 1739.

If you want to see Dick Turpin it is said that his ghost now haunts an Inn in Kent. He has been sighted by a number of patrons quietly seated at a table writing with a quill pen. He is said to be sporting a plumed hat and wearing a green velvet jacket.

Another famous highwayman turned ghost is that of Tom Black. The man was called nicknamed Tom Black because of his jet black hair and dark complexion. Tom was eventually caught and hung at the junction of Union St and Tavistock in Bedford. The story claims that the locals were so afraid of Tom Black that when they buried him at the crossroads they put a steak through his heart to keep him from rising from the grave. Sadly according to locals this was not effective.

Many people have claimed to have seen the Ghost of Tom. And he has not been sighted alone. He is rumored to have found a ghostly friend. The second ghost has not been identified but people in years past have been so terrorized that they would not go out in the dark for fear of encountering Tom and his pal.

Lychpole Manor is another place that claims to have a resident highwayman ghost. It is said that at the turn of the 19th century travelers were set upon by a highwayman on the stretch of tracks between the village of Landing and Steying. The un-named highwayman was eventually caught and convicted.

In the tradition of the times the guilty man was hung by the crossroads. Before his execution he swore revenge on the town. He claimed that no-one would pass over his body easily, they would feel the bump and jolt of his remains forever. Strangely it is said that they actually placed his grave right across the road. The following day the towns people were shocked to discover that the head of the highway man had become unburied. This was an event that was to happen many times in the future. And people who travelled the road at night claimed that as they passed that spot they hit a rock or big bump. But when they examined the area closer there was nothing there.

For whatever reason the ghost stories surrounding highwayman are numerous and varied. These spooky, strange tales come from all over the world. Maybe it is because so many of them died in such violent ways.

The video is somewhat compelling and also contains some interesting photos. The author states that reason why the particular room in the video is so active is that the home – circa 1953 was built partly over an early 18th century farmhouse.

The ghost? The famous Lady in Brown. The shooter, well known novelist, Captain Frederick Marryat.

The Lady in Brown is believed to be Dorothy Townsend, wife of Lord Townsend and sister to Sir Robert Walpole, the man considered to be the first Prime Minister of England. Why is she still haunting Raynham Hall?

The legend says that Lord Townsend discovered his wife was having an affair and that he decided to punish her. In one version he kills her by pushing her down the stairs. In another version he locks her up in a room and keeps her there until her death. The “official” version is that she contracted small pox and died on the 29th of March 1726.

It is said that she now roams the hallways of Raynham House searching for her children. Her husband had kept them apart either due to her illness, or by locking her up and now she is left searching. Over the years she has been sited by numerous people including a famous account by King George the 4th who woke up to see the spectre standing over his bed.

The most famous sighting of all was in 1936. Country Life Magazine was doing a story about the house and sent over two photographers to take pictures. Captain Provand and Indre Shira were taking pictures when they saw something mysterious coming down the stairs. It looked like some kind of mist. They were able to get one picture, which is now one of the most famous photographs of a ghost ever captured.

What is on the film? No one knows for sure. But according to numerous sources the photo has not been altered or tampered with. Ghost….you decide.

Raynham Hall – History Documentry

In the stairway of the hall there appears to be the figure of a young girl. Nobody, saw this girl at the scene of the of the fire. And how was she able to get so close to such an intense fire? And if nobody saw her, how is it that she appeared on Tony’s film?

Many believe that this is the ghost of a young girl named Jane Churm. According to local accounts Jane Churm had accidentally started a fire in the town of Wem in the year 1677. It is said that she dropped a candle and that the thatched roof of her house caught. The fire then quickly spread to many of the town’s houses and buildings, many of which were made of wood.

Sources are sketchy about the actual fire and the damage done. One reference claims the fire caused 23 677 pounds worth of damage. It has also been said that the fire in the town burned so hot that the village church bells melted and had to be re-cast. Some claim that Jane herself was a victim of the fire and now haunts the town hall.

The photograph has been studied by many different sources. There has been no evidence of tampering or altering. Sceptics, however claim that the image is just a strange combination of light, shadows and smoke.
Is it all just a trick of the light? Or is it the ghost of Jane, come back to another fire?
