Highwayman Ghosts
One common belief about ghosts relates to the manner of their deaths. it is said that people who die suddenly, tragically or violently, often become ghosts. Perhaps because they do not realize they are dead or maybe it’s that they have vowed revenge or perhaps they are trying to atone for something that they have done during their life. Criminals seem to fit this profile very well, and that may be why so many convicts have been seen as ghosts. It also would account for the fact that prisons are a real hot spots for ghost hunters.
Throughout history especially in Europe you can find accounts of highwaymen hauntings. They have been known to haunt, their places of execution, their hideouts and their favorite spots to rob people.
One of the most famous highwaymen was the rogue Dick Turpin. Dick was born in 1705 in Essex, England. As a young man he joined the infamous band of robbers the Gregory Gang. His life of crime included, cattle theft, smuggling, highway robbery and murder. He was caught and executed in 1739.
If you want to see Dick Turpin it is said that his ghost now haunts an Inn in Kent. He has been sighted by a number of patrons quietly seated at a table writing with a quill pen. He is said to be sporting a plumed hat and wearing a green velvet jacket.
Another famous highwayman turned ghost is that of Tom Black. The man was called nicknamed Tom Black because of his jet black hair and dark complexion. Tom was eventually caught and hung at the junction of Union St and Tavistock in Bedford. The story claims that the locals were so afraid of Tom Black that when they buried him at the crossroads they put a steak through his heart to keep him from rising from the grave. Sadly according to locals this was not effective.
Many people have claimed to have seen the Ghost of Tom. And he has not been sighted alone. He is rumored to have found a ghostly friend. The second ghost has not been identified but people in years past have been so terrorized that they would not go out in the dark for fear of encountering Tom and his pal.
Lychpole Manor is another place that claims to have a resident highwayman ghost. It is said that at the turn of the 19th century travelers were set upon by a highwayman on the stretch of tracks between the village of Landing and Steying. The un-named highwayman was eventually caught and convicted.
In the tradition of the times the guilty man was hung by the crossroads. Before his execution he swore revenge on the town. He claimed that no-one would pass over his body easily, they would feel the bump and jolt of his remains forever. Strangely it is said that they actually placed his grave right across the road. The following day the towns people were shocked to discover that the head of the highway man had become unburied. This was an event that was to happen many times in the future. And people who travelled the road at night claimed that as they passed that spot they hit a rock or big bump. But when they examined the area closer there was nothing there.
For whatever reason the ghost stories surrounding highwayman are numerous and varied. These spooky, strange tales come from all over the world. Maybe it is because so many of them died in such violent ways.

In the video below you will find a compilation of what many believe to be the best ten video clips that support the existence of ghosts and other paranormal activity filmed by the Ghost Hunters.
Since there has been a lot of skepticism and other talk about the integrity of the Ghost Hunters especially since the Halloween episode, I have included a link below of an interview with former TAPS member Donna Lacroix. Within the interview she claims that many of the shows have been staged and evidence faked.
Mansfield Reformatory

There are many places that claim to be haunted and to have paranormal activity, but few can compare to Mansfield Reformatory. Not only does the number of strange occurrences reported make it stand out, but also the large number of individual ghosts that seem to keep reappearing to investigators and visitors.
Construction on Mansfield Reformatory began in 1886, but due to funding problems and delays the building was not ready to house inmates until 1896. Even though the prison was officially open it was not finished. One-hundred and fifty prisoners arrived at the prison and were recruited to help with the final stages of construction. Between the time of its opening at its official closure in 1984 the prison saw more than its fair share of deaths and tragic events.

Tales relating to this prison include the death of a warden, his wife, a nurse, and a number of guards who were killed on a duty. There are also countless prisoners who died, either by their own hand, at the hands of guards or by other prisoners. The prison was also the sight of numerous state executions, that were carried out by the electric chair.
The warden’s room is considered to be one of the most active points of paranormal activity. It was here that the warden’s wife Helen Glattke died under strange circumstances. The official report states that she was reaching into a closet to retrieve a hatbox, when a gun that was hidden behind fell off the shelf and discharged resulting in her death. Rumours that her husband was somehow involved in her death were rampant but no proof of this was ever discovered. Warden Glattke suffered a fatal heart in this same room a number of years later.
Many people claim that they smell strange rose perfume in the warden’s room or that they have caught the scent of cigars, which Warden Glattke was known to smoke. Others report that they have heard the voices of a man and a woman arguing within the office. Inmates often spoke of the feeling that someone was tucking them in at night and many of them believed that this was the ghost of either Helen or the nurse.
Mansfield Reformatory Prison – East Cell Block

The nurse in the Mansfield Reformatory is another abnormally active ghost. She was said to have been killed by an inmate while she was working. People visiting the infirmary will often hear strange sounds, experience equipment failure and/or see orbs drifting around the room. They may also experience drafts and feel cold spots in the room as they pass through.
Another area that is said to have particularly strong energies is the area that was called the hole. The hole is what is more commonly known as solitary confinement. Prisoners who had committed an offence or had broken prison rules were sent here for punishment. There are reports that many an inmate was tortured and died within this small area of the prison. People who have gone into this area report feelings of overwhelming nausea and discomfort. Physics attribute these feelings to the negative energies that linger in this area.
Particularity noteworthy, is the basement of the prison. A ghost of a young boy and a former employee of the prison have been regularly sighted here. Other highly charged areas in the prison include the chapel and the library. Although there is no documentation, it is thought that the chapel was used as an early execution room. Numerous ghosts and misty beings have been sighted lingering in these spots.
Throughout the entire building strange noises and cold regions have been reported. Voices, lights, footsteps and drafts are commonly reported. Equipment failure is a regular occurrence as are drafts and smells. If you are lucky enough to go the Mansfield Reformatory be prepared.. for anything.

Ridges Graveyard – Asylum Cemeteries

A neat and orderly graveyard where all the headstones are in lines. Row upon row, upon row. What makes this graveyard stand out? Maybe it is the fact that there are no names on most of the stones, only numbers. Or maybe it is the ring of graves off to the side. Or maybe it is the number of strange sightings that have been seen in this cemetery.
This is what you can expect to find if you visit The Ridges graveyard in Athens, Ohio. It is reputed to be one of the most haunted areas in the world. Why would this cemetery be any more haunted than any other cemetery? Perhaps it has to do with the people who are buried here.
These people died within the walls of The Athens Mental Hospital. They were all patients. While they were alive they would have been subjected to numerous treatments that were to help them ‘get well’. Sadly, many of these treatments were not just horrific, many of them rendered the patient worse off than when they started. In fact, some of the treatments were often even deadly. When patients did die and were buried, they simply put a number on the headstone. No name or date, just a number.
Many of the patients who were treated at the hospital were not just insane. Many of them were also criminals. One of the most infamous patients of the hospital was convicted rapist Billy Mulligan. Although Billy is nor buried here, many of his predecessors are. Among the dead are hundreds of civil war soldiers who became residents of the hospital, following the war. These people were tortured souls in life.
The residents of the grave yard are not the only unique thing about this cemetery. There are numerous rumours and legends attached to the site and where the tombstones are placed. All the graves are neatly laid out in rows except for a few off to the side. These graves form a circle. Locals claim that this area was used by witches who were practising spells and magic. Sceptics say that the graves were moved by juveniles wishing to create their own mystery.
Whichever is true, either the witches or the vandals, there are numerous accounts and reports of paranormal activity in the cemetery. These range from strange lights to ghostly beings. Close to this area there is a wooden bridge which allows people to cross over the creek to reach a few isolated graves that are in a wooded area. Over the years there have been numerous reports of screams and noises coming from this section of the cemetery. Investigators of the cemetery have stated that there are high levels of energy in these areas as well.
Whether or not you believe in ghosts or the paranormal, the fact remains that the number of people who claim to have seen things in this cemetery is way above average.
