This huge castle was built in 1625 in the Northern part of Ireland. The most active ghost in residence is said to be one of the former lady’s of the house. It is said that Isobel Shaw wife of the lord of the castle kept her locked in her room. He also was said to be slowing starving her until she finally leapt from one of the windows.

Built in 1625, Ballygally Castle is one of the most haunted places in Northern Ireland. Overlooking the sea at the head of Ballygally Bay, it has been said that sometimes this hotel can have more ghosts than guests.

But the most active ghost is the playful former resident, Lady Isobel Shaw, who amuses herself by knocking at the doors of different rooms and then suddenly disappearing. When she was alive, Isobel was locked in her room and starved by her husband. She lept to her death from a window.
Madame Nixon is another ghost who lived in the hotel in the nineteenth century. She can be heard walking around the hotel in her silk dress.

The two unfortunate sailors who are said to be the spirit faces in the water died while sailing aboard the S.S. Watertown. The huge oil tanker was sailing through the Panama Canal from New York. The seamen were said to have been cleaning an area of the ship that had a lot of gas fumes. Sadly, the two succumbed to the fumes and were then, as was the custom, buried in the Pacific Ocean.

Crewmates of the two dead sailors then began to see the faces of their departed mates in the water following the ship. The Captain of the S.S. Watertown was alerted to these eerie sightings and used the only camera on board the vessel to take pictures of the strange phantom faces.

The Captain is said to have taken the camera and placed it into the ship’s safe for the sake of security and to ensure that nothing happened to the film. When the boat docked, the photos were developed and although five of the pictures failed to reveal anything, the faces did appear in the sixth. Both the Captain and the first mate swore to the authenticity of the film when an investigation was underway.

The faces were only seen while the ship was in the Pacific Ocean, but they were reported to have been sighted on more than one voyage. However, after the crew of the tanker changed hands, the phantom faces never appeared again to any members of the new crew or to any other ships.

Many people have undertaken the challenged of trying to verify if the photo is genuine, or if it has, in fact, been altered in some way. Some investigators now claim that the entire episode was merely a giant hoax. However, if that is the case, what about the crewmen who all claimed to have seen the images? Were they all lying? Was it merely a big hoax? Believers do not think so!

She fell asleep on the couch in her living room which shares a wall with her sisters room and is across from bathroom. She woke up at 3:00 in the morning to go the bathroom and then tried to get back to sleep. She heard a sudden sound like someone banging on the wall and she heard the sound of someone opening and closing the cupboards in the bathroom. It stops and then 15 minutes later it starts up again. She and her dog run to the living room on the other side of her house (she was two living rooms and a big house). She laid down on the floor because her sister was on the couch because she never sleeps in her room.

She can still hear noises a the other end of her house. Suddenly it stops. She says that she was clenching her eyes closed because she could feel someone watching her from the end of the hallway. She hears soft footsteps like someone walking on carpet. She feels like there is someone behind her and then she hears her name and she says it sounded like it was “kind of hanging in the air”

At this point she opens her eyes and turns around and there is no one there. She starts crying and runs to her mothers room. Two hours later she is on the ed and it feels like there is a hand pressing down on the bed next to her. She turns, thinking it is her cat but there is no cat. As she is starting to fall asleep she hears tapping on the doorframe and shuffling noises. She says they went on for another half an hour and then finally stopped.

His strange tale involves murder, theft, revenge and mystery. In life the Dr. was a resident of Ironton, Ohio. His strange tale begins with the death of his wife Sarah. When Sarah died the Dr. went to the local undertaker and ordered a very expensive casket. However, when the coffin arrived, Lowry changed his mind and said he did not want the item, refusing to pay He stated that the reason for his change of heart was that the coffin was not perfect; it had a very small chip.

The story continues about two years later when the Dr. Was found dead in his home, and although the weather was very hot, the heat was on in the house. The official cause of his death was a stroke, but many did not believe this and thought that the Dr. had met with foul play. Some thought that the heirs of the Doctor had, in fact, poisoned him.

Woodland Cemetery

In a strange twist of fate the Doctor’s body was taken to the same undertaker that he had offended years earlier. The undertaker in a moment of revenge decided to bury the Dr. In the very coffin that he had spurned. The Dr. was too tall and heavy to fit in the casket so the undertaker took it upon himself to make the Doctor Fit. He broke the Dr. Legs and folded them in and the cut open the Doctor’s stomach removing all of his vital organs.

The tale does not end there. In time the authorities were persuaded to re-open the investigation into the Doctor’s death. They received a permit to exhume the body but when they dug up the remains to examine them for traces of toxins, they were shocked to find that there were no internal organs for them to check. The undertaker was questioned and did confess to what he had done. He even took the investigators to the place where he had disposed of the missing parts. Sadly, for the Doctor, the organs had decayed beyond the point of being useful to the investigators. With no evidence, there was no possible way of determining if Lowry had been poisoned. The case would remain open.

Ever since the time of the Lowry’s death people have been claiming to have seen his ghost moving about the Woodland cemetery and the town library which was built on the site of the Doctor’s old home. It is no wonder that the spirit of the Doctor is said to be restless. Some believe that he remains earth bound trying to find his missing body parts while other believe that he remains to see justice done.

The ghost of Sukie the bride is said to roam in these dark caverns. Whether she is searching for her lover, or for those that killed her, nobody knows for certain. What is known about the ghost bride is her sad life story.

Sukie was a girl who worked in the nearby town. When Sukie was of age to be married, she turned her attention away from all the local young men and set her sights on marrying someone in the upper class.

Sukie did eventually find a man, but the local young men were jealous and felt that they needed to teach her a lesson. One day they sent Sukie a note, on behave of her fiance, saying that he wanted to meet with her later that night in the caves beneath the old abbey. Sukie was to go there by herself and was to be wearing her wedding dress. Somewhat mystified but excited, Sukie arrived at the caves at the appointed time only to discover that she had, in fact, been duped.

The only people at the caves were Sukie and three of the local lads which laughed at the humiliated young woman. In retaliation, the story says that Sukie threw a rock at one of the lads. Things then quickly got out of hand, and they began tossing rocks back at Sukie. Unfortunately, Sukie was hit on the head and, as a result, died in the caves wearing her wedding dress.

Today Sukie is often seen in the Hellfire Caves by numerous visitors. People who have seen the apparition say she appears to be lost and forlorn as she slowly wanders through the dark chambers.

Hell Fire Caves – Various Paranormal Phenomena

The other resident ghost said to be in the caves is Paul Whitehead. In life, Paul was one of the original members of the Hellfire Club.

In the early part of the 1700’s, Sir Francis Dashwood, the 15th Baron le Despencer, leased a parcel of land just outside of London near the small town of West Wycombe. Features of the land included the old Madmenham Abbey and the caves. The entrance to caves was very close to the abbey. In fact, portions of the caves actually run right beneath the old structure.

In 1740, the local farmers had experienced a number of bad harvests, and they needed work. The Area was also experiencing a small building boom due to few of the gentry building estates in the area. To help alleviate the farmers economic situation, and to provide materials for the necessary road building, Sir Francis opened the caves to chalk excavation. The work within the caves continued until almost 1750.

When the excavation did cease, it is said that, Sir Francis moved the location of his secret club to the cave’s depths. The Sir Francis club, which during its day, went by a number of different names, had been meeting in the old abbey. Shortly after moving to the caves, the club was named the Hellfire club.

All of the original 12 members of the club were men. Many of the men had political aspirations, and it would not have been in their best interest to be seen doing anything that might offend members of polite society. To counter the many restrictions placed upon them, they formed the Hellfire club.

The club whose motto was “Do what you will“ certainly tried to live up to this. It is said that drinking and orgies were not uncommon events at these gatherings. Members called each other brothers and wore hoods and cloaks to keep their identity concealed from the locals.

Paul Whitehead was not only a member of the club, but was also its steward and secretary. Upon his death, he requested that his heart be placed in an urn in the old abbey. The rest of his body was to be buried on consecrated church ground some miles away.

As per his request, his heart was placed in an urn and remained in the abbey for about fifty years. In 1829 the heart disappeared. It is rumored that the heart was actually stolen out of the abbey by an Austrian.

Paul’s ghost is said to have been seen by numerous people in the caverns. He appears as a gentleman with a beard and a mustache wearing out dated clothes. His movements are said to be those of one who is searching. Many believe that the ghost of Paul has returned and will continue to roam the caves until his missing heart is found.

The castle is presently the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield Bt., his wife The Hon. Lady Wakefield and their family. The family claim it is the most haunted castle because of the many ghosts which frequently haunt their home.

The most notable ghostly apparition is the ‘blue boy’ (or ‘radiant boy’) who is said to haunt the castle’s Pink Room. Many guests, whilst occupying the room, have heard terrifying wailing sounds soon to be followed by a halo of blue light appearing above their bed.

Although that particular haunting ended when a gruesome discovery during renovation work revealed the bones of a young boy and a man who had been bricked inside a wall. It was intended that no one should ever hear their piteous cries for help, as the wall was built 10 feet thick.

A Short Tour of Chillingham Castle

This was not the end to the hauntings in Chillingham Castle. The owners have also witnessed a much more sinister energy which wanders the halls…the terryfying spectre of the once evil torturer – John Sage.

JOHN SAGE – A GHOST OF EVIL PAST

When nightime falls around Chillingham Castle, one of the most feared sounds to be heard on occasions is that of ‘something’ slowly dragging its foot as it wanders the corridors. It is believed to be the spirit of former Lieutenant, John Sage who earned the nickname ‘dragfoot’, when in life, his leg was injured by a spear during his final battle in the ongoing wars with his Scottish neighbours.

After his injury he was desperate for a position of work and was proud to be given the title of Chillingham Castle torturer by the castle owner Edward Longshanks (1200 AD). Sage was a monster of a man and his gruesome work would give him immense satisfaction for the next 3 years, where he would go on to torture at least 50 of his Scottish enemies per week.

Sage would revel as the Scots were captured and tossed into the castle’s dungeons. These poor souls would wish they had perished on the battlefield, as Sage was renowned for carrying out the most hideous tortures in history. One torture device came to be known as one of the most feared…’the cage’. This apparatus would trap its victim and then be placed over a blazing fire – roasting the captive for hours, whilst Sage sat studying his enemy – writhing and screaming for their death.

Sage’s insatiable thirst for torture would eventually lead to his downfall, when one day his lover Elizabeth Charlton paid him a visit. During their sexual liaison, Sage decided to place Elizabeth on one of his other torture devices – ‘the rack’. Sage then began strangling her during the height of her sexual pleasure, but he went too far and accidentally killed her.

Chillingham Castle Ghosthunt – Orbs & Ghosts

Elizabeth’s father (a Border Reiver, clan leader and outlaw), upon hearing of his daughter’s death, warned the now almost penniless Longshanks, if he did not have Sage killed he would join in an allied attack with the Scots against the Castle.

Longshanks’ dwindling resources due to the war and the fact that the Border Reiver’s were a powerful force gave him little choice but to put Sage to death. He was hanged on the grounds of the castle on ‘Devil’s Mile’ (aka, Devil’s Walk) before a crowd of jeering onlookers.

As Sage’s body still twitched with life, the crowd set about him – slicing pieces from his body, including his nose, toes, and testicles. A rather ‘cutting’ fate, some may say, for one who’s greatest rapture was the sight of an ungodly end.

The answer isn’t simple. Science and spirituality are important to any discussion about ghosts and hauntings. Whether or not you believe in ghosts may depend on your personal experiences, how well you can remain calm and logical in an eerie setting, and your religious background.

Many people want to believe after experiencing something strange. They saw, heard, or felt something that they couldn’t describe, except as an encounter with a spirit or ghost. Soon, they’re checking paranormal websites, reading ghost books, going on ghost tours, and looking for nearby haunts to explore.

They usually find more questions than answers.

So far, no one can prove that ghosts are real, or that they’re not real. All anyone can say is that something odd is going on at some haunted places.

If ghosts are real, they’re the best way to explain what happens at places such as the Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana, the Spalding Inn in New Hampshire, and the Falstaff Experience in England’s Stratford-upon-Avon.

However, most ghostly encounters aren’t as dramatic as what occurs at those famous haunts.

For example, many people wonder if their homes are haunted. Doors may seem to open and close by themselves. A television might turn itself on or off, or even change channels and volume, when no one is in the room. People sometimes feel an unexplained draft, or they feel sad, scared or angry for no apparent reason.

There can be logical explanations for all of those events, and those must be ruled out before deciding that ghosts are real and the home is haunted.

TV shows may influence viewers. They start looking at odd events and wonder if they might be caused by ghosts or even demons. That can be frightening, until they understand what’s really going on. It might be a ghost, but it might be something far simpler.

Most ghost researchers will tell you that about 80% of “haunted” houses aren’t troubled by ghosts at all. Those homes are rarely shown on TV because they’re not as sensational as those with real paranormal energy.

Even ardent believers in hauntings will admit that there is no scientific proof of ghosts. However, they’ll also share experiences that can only be explained as a ghostly encounter.

Do ghosts exist? Are ghosts real?

All we know is that something is going on in many “haunted” places, and — so far — we can’t find a normal, scientific explanation for it. That’s why ghost hunters keep looking.

Ghosts are spiritual presences that, through the use of energy, usually take on a physical form to interact with the physical environment. Most ghosts are not evil or bad, rather they are spiritual energies that have a message which they need to get across to someone. Many ghosts do not, in fact, even know they are ghosts and as such simply helping them to understand this is all that is needed for them to move on.

An apparition isn’t really a ghost at all! It’s more like a memory that, because of the intense emotions and circumstances surrounding it, has been locked into time and place. Thus, when you encounter an apparition interacting with it does little to no good, because nothing is really there except for the memory.

For instance, let us suppose that a man and his wife are having an argument. The man takes out a gun and shoots his wife then turns the gun on himself. Many years later, people start to notice that there is a man with a gun and they hear the shrieking of a woman and this centers around one room of this home. What we have here is not ghosts, but rather apparitions. The memory of the event is firmly trapped that particular room and when a certain amount of energy or a certain type of energy is present; that energy sets off that memory so that it plays out, like someone accidentally touching the start button on a VCR which starts playing whatever tape is in the machine.

This is sometimes called a residual haunting and the best way to end an apparition is via a good clearing, cleansing, and smudging of the area.

A spirit, unlike a ghost, usually does not take on a physical form, but exists around a person in a purely energetic form which is often only visible to someone with clairvoyance. Most spirits choose to interact with our world, to hang around loved ones, and to check in on us. Sometimes, like a ghost, they may not be aware that they have crossed over. It is usually spirits that a medium connects with.

A poltergeist, a word which means noisy ghost, is most often associated with things that people are truly frightened of. Examples of poltergeist activity include chairs moving or pictures spinning. The thing about poltergeists is that they develop due to all the energy that is in the environment. Most often, we see cases of poltergeist activity in home that have children who are just entering their teens. All that pent up sexual energy and all the changing hormones produce energy that is often uncontrolled.

Uncontrolled energy is still energy and so what happens is that uncontrolled energy ends up making pictures spin and things move. When these children learn to control their emotions and energy the so called poltergeists stop being active.

The same can be true in any environment which contains a lot of high stress or high sexual energy. When this energy is not properly grounded it can create results here in the physical world.

What this basically means is that for an estimated ninety-five percent of the population that experiences ghosts, apparitions, spirits, and poltergeists, there is no real change of harm coming to them.

Every now and again, on rare occasions, we do encounter in our physical world something of a darker type of energy that is altogether evil at its very core. These energies usually are not coming from any of the above, but rather are connected to some type of demonic energy that has been allowed into our world. Please understand the following about such energies. These energies, the majority of them, can only hurt people if the people they are preying upon allow them to do so. Likewise, it is not possible for a person to be possessed by such energy unless that particular person meddles with psychic or magickal stuff they don’t understand or they subconsciously want and therefore allow the possession to take place.

Attachments are more common than actual possessions. An attachment is a spiritual energy or entity that is attached to a person and/or vice versa. Attachments can form at almost any time, but are most often seen when a relative that a person was very close to crosses over and neither isn’t ready for the crossing to happen. Understand, not all attachments are bad or negative. They are only considered bad if the attachment ends up interfering in a person’s life of if the attachment attempts to take over or control a person’s life. Thus, just because Aunt Betty wants a person to continue giving money to her children long after she has passed away doesn’t mean that person is obligated to do as they are requested.

The White House over the years has always had its ghostly legends, especially the legend of Abraham Lincoln himself who throughout history has been seen by numerous residents, including none other than Winston Churchill himself.

After staying in the White House one night during the Second World War. Churchill had retired to take a hot bath, and sip a brandy before retiring to bed. He left the bathroom, walking naked, a cigar in his mouth, into his bedroom. To his surprise, he saw Abraham Lincoln himself standing warming himself by the fire. Being Churchill he just remarked, “Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage.” Lincoln left with a smile.

A succession of Presidents, first ladies and their children have all claimed to see the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, including President Truman, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Maureen Reagan, the daughter of President Reagan. He often appears in his old bedroom, the hallway and was even seen gazing out of the window, in bleak contemplation.

The Lincoln ghost is the most famous of several ghosts reported to haunt the White House. Andrew Jackson is said to haunt the Rose bedroom. Often visitors and staff have heard him swearing and laughing, including several VIP guests of the President, who often stay in the Rose Bedroom.

One sinister story of the White house lays in its basement. Washington’s, “Demon Cat,” is said to remain a room aptly named in the “crypt.” The Cat only appears as a warning to some natural disaster, and was seen first as a kitten, and grows into a large black cat -the night before the great Wall Street crash, and JFK Kennedy’s assassination.

The Obama family are not the only residents who have experienced ghostly goings on in the White House, and probably will not be the last. But one wonders about the mystery of Abraham Lincoln, still lurking in bleak solitude in the corridors, and bedrooms of the White House. And how our leaders readily confirm one of the most famous homes in Washington is haunted.
